A Whole New World
It’s important that students are able to see the world that lies beyond their backyards. However, we can’t just pack our students on a plane and take them on a new adventure in a moment’s notice. Using Google Maps, Cardboard and Geoguessr, we’ll be taking a deeper look at how we can show students a whole new world, that exists right at their fingertips.

Youtube in Edu

YouTube allows billions of people to discover, create, and share originally created videos. YouTube provides a forum for people to connect, inform and inspire others across the globe and acts as a platform for content creators, teachers and advertisers.

As an educator, whether you are considering using videos in your lesson plans, adding historical videos into your social science class, or conducting a video field trip of ancient Roman ruins, YouTube is a great tool for better teaching and learning.

How to use Google Forms and Docs to gather content to build three levels of digital portfolios class, group, and individual
In this session you will learn how to enable your students to proactively use their computers, Chromebooks, or even smartphones, as their own “simultaneous media” (Joint Media Engagement) to collaborate with one another, search topics and ideas on the internet, and curate and submit digital portfolio artifacts in real-time in the classroom. Additionally, your students will engage in more critical thinking and higher level thinking skills as they share their experiences, find examples, and collaborate with you (their teacher) and other classmates.

Course Level Digital Portfolio: Students take notes and answer questions using Google Forms during the “teaching” (lecture) part of class, and their responses are then shared via links to the class Google Site which creates “Social” note-taking, brainstorming, peer-feedback, etc.

Group Level Digital Portfolio: Students used Google Docs to collaborate with their group members to gather information and examples from the internet to solve problems, conduct reviews, build collages, etc. which they place in their group Google Site.

Individual Level Digital Portfolio: Individually, your students can use their devices to respond to classroom learning reflection questions and curate artifacts for their own portfolios.

Enable “Micro Learning Moments” for your students by using Google Sites in your class and ubiquitously share class information with students
Recently there has been a rise in what are called “micro learning moments”. These are very short moments in time when students can access learning material on their mobile device allowing more frequent opportunities to review class material. As mobile devices are always with learners (and they are continually looking at them for updates on facebook) why not get your students to use their device as a tool to learn?

The instructor share the methods to put all your course information on easy to build and use Google Sites. Enable your students to access the information ubiquitously, that is anytime and anywhere. Students who reported using their devices for ‘micro moment’ learning scored higher than average on assignments and exams. Also, by using free Google Site Analytics with your course websites, you can to learn more about how the students used the site, what they liked, and where they “dropped-off” using their devices. This paper discusses a study using Google education tools to enhance student micro learning moments. Both qualitative and quantitative feedback will be discussed.

Free Learning: Unlocking Student Passion & Potential
Free running invites participants to use creativity, skill and strength to find new ways to navigate a landscape. It is fun, engaging and highly motivating for those who participate. It takes a space (urban or otherwise) and turns it on its head, drawing new functions from an existing, and very fixed, form. In much the same way, Free Learning aims to provide students with an intellectual landscape through which they can playfully discover their own path. It promotes creativity, individuality, team work, freedom and taking responsibility. In this presentation, participants will encounter the Free Learning story, come to understand its underpinnings, and access a live Free Learning environment.brew install libdvdcss

Track your students' engagement: Use Google Forms, Docs, and Sites to understand and improve interaction and participation in the classroom
In this workshop you will learn how students can use their mobile devices to answer worksheet questions on Google Forms survey tools. As Google Forms are automatically recording and grading students submissions (which are also instantly emailed back to students) in spreadsheets as students submit their responses. Also, using shared Google Docs for group work you can track student engagement and participation. As a teacher you will be able to keep full records of your student’s participation in each class.

As students submissions are immediately available to the instructor in Google Sheets and Docs, you will be able to show students (anonymously) exemplars of on- and off-target work, and encourage students to try again to approach learning mastery. It was estimated that “instructor-student interaction”, that is, direct student interaction with individuals and groups, went up from about 20% to over 65% of the time during class. Also, using free Google analytics for the course website, the instructor will be able to learn more about what students liked and used within the site both while they are inside and outside of the classroom.
